I’ve just had an email from Steve, who must be down at Dar es Salaam to meet Pia off the plane.  He’s asked me to take some stuff out for him – some stationery and interestingly the largest pot of marmite I can carry.  It’s amazing isn’t it that you can be the most cosmopolitan and international person but there are always some things that connect you to home.  When we lived abroad (Germany 3 years, Gibraltar for 2) we always took marmite, digestive biscuits and English tea.   My daughter who lives in Holland stocked up on tea and brown sauce when she was here over Christmas.  I remember once being on a campsite in, I think Italy, and buying a tin of Heinz baked beans for a ridiculous sum as I was overcome with homesickness and nostalgia at the sight of it!
