I’ve been listening to a great album for the last week or so.  It’s by a band called Tinariwen who are a bunch of Tuareg from Mali in the Western Sahara.

Tuareg are the veiled  nomads of the sahara and used to transport salt across the desert using their camels.   Interestingly, the wikipedia history page has a ‘health warning’ about the neutrality of the information on the page.  Lets just say the Tuaregs have been campaigning for independence from the government of Mali for a long time.

If you want to hear an example of their music it’s on their MySpace page here.  I heard them first on Andy Kershaw’s Desert Island Discs on Radio 4 a couple of weeks ago.  As he put it, ‘Lots of bands can rock and roll, lots of bands can rock but not many can roll’.
